Difference between RAM configurations

Hmmm

As far as I know you should be able to get equal performance out of those combinations. I would rather go the 2x512 way cause it leaves space for an upgrade in the future.

would dual channel come into play here, if you have dual channel then maybe a good i idea to go multiple sticks, provided you set them up right. If you dont have dual channel then go with fewer sticks (one would be good) as you may be able to squeeze tighter timings. Oh and of course as jancz3rt said you will leave room for upgrades

i think that technically you should see a slight, and i mean slight, performance increase with the 4 x 256, however i would still be tempted by the 2 X 512 for future upgrage capacity, i 6 months you may be able to afford another 2 X 512 and you want room to improve you system

Regardless of whether dual channel kicks in or not 2xSomething will tend to outperform 4xSomething. In the case of the former (a) its more likely to run Command Rate 1T than 2T and (b) in the latter, its more likely/possible that it will be running one notch down from its maximum speed. Regardless, 2xSomething and 4xSomething will run in Dual Channel if supported
