difference between these two processors

Price only since both are the exact same thing at the links there. The first thing to look at the specifications seen on both pages showing the same information.

That is what I don't understand. If they are the same thing, why is one 20 bucks more?

They do have different part numbers. Maybe that means something.

From Intel:

Thank you for contacting Intel(R) Customer Support.

I understand that you want to know the difference between the Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo processor E8400 and E8400A.

Both are the same processor, just different box order code but physically the processor is the same one.
In other words there is no difference on both processors.

Please do not hesitate to contact us again if you need further assistance.

Sincerely,

Adolfo S.

Ones has less physical units available; stingy, arbitrary or profitable pricing.

The only other found you will note when looking those two pages over a little more carefully is Cache Memory 6MB L2 (Advanced Smart)
Form Factor 775-pin LGA Socket T

The higher price for the one on the first link only shows Cache Memory 6MB L2

The specifications reveal all when gone over carefully for that one little difference.

I noticed that too. Forget to say anything. So wouldn't you want the want the one that says Advanced Smart? Or am I wrong?

The information on advanced smart is the thing to look at on this.

Intel® Advanced Smart Cache

The Intel Advanced Smart Cache is a multi-core optimized cache that significantly reduces latency to frequently used data, thus improving performance and efficiency by increasing the probability that each execution core of a multi-core processor can access data from a high-performance, more efficient cache subsystem.

That might have simply beed additional information added to that particular page rather then being any difference in cpu design itself. I suspect that was added along iwith the lower price to see the same model in order to see it sell faster.

I would simply save the $20 on the listing found at the second link unless you find a better deal elsewhere. The only thing other then price seen there was the little more added to one page and not the other.
