Difference between Widescreen and Fullscreen Aspect Ratios

Hi Everyone. Can anyone tell me what is the main difference between a widescreen and a fullscreen aspect ratio of a video/DVD?

And tell me which one would be best for theatrical experience!

You can see more to the left and right.

Haha my mom still thinks that you're losing picture in wide screen (top and bottom).

widescreen or 16:9 is the aspect ratio used in many movies and TV shows which is the main reason TVs are starting to adopt it, whenever you see those black bars on your TV its because the program was filmed in 16:9 (or similar) ratio while you TVs a 4:3 ratio, wide screen TVs eliminate those bars since there screen is the same ratio...get it?

I think widescreen is the absolute worst thing ever created. If I could, I would get every movie in full screen, since with widescreen you're loosing alot of available screen space on either you're TV or PC. Some formats are worse then others, and only use about half the height of a standard TV.

If you use a widescreen TV for full screen movies/television, it will stretch it and make it look distorted.

Cut off the Edges

Here's what I learned. For movies (practically all of them) they are filmed in a widescreen format 16:9. When you get a fullscreen movie they usually (all the ones I've seen) "This film has been formatted from its original version. This film has been formatted to fit you television screen" something like that. And the way they format it is by simply cutting off the edges  (left and right side) to a 4:3 ration, then zoom it in a bit and it fits the standard TV screen. So in actuality, your loosing some of the picture. That's why I like widescreen, you see everything and if you have a decently sized TV and the movie is good, you wont notice the bars.:)

wow! that's surprising, i love widescreen because any movie you buy that's in full screen mode has to be cut on both sides to make i fit on a full screen TV, yet widescreen only has the black bars so either way widescreen wins...if you can deal with the bars

black bars > cut out part of movie

i disagree with you

i saw a piece on tv about the benefits of widescreen

all movie are filmed in widescreen and you get more in the shot.

when its converted to fullscreen they have to go through the whole movie and select a 4:3 area that will be shown

when you do this part of the shot is taken out and it can ruin the experience or the feel in the shot

i always go for widescreen

I know you loose some of the picture, it's basically the same as using the zoom feature on the DVD player. But if you have 4:3 monitors and TV's, you really get annoyed with only using about 1/2-3/4 of your available monitor/tv space, and it's harder to see from far away.

that's why widescreen TVs where invented either way the widescreen camp wins because you never lose picture on a widescreen and if your TVs widescreen you see no bars, while if you use full screen you ALWAYS loose the picture even on full screen TVs but i guess its up to preference ;)

Not all widescreen movies are the same aspect ratio.

With some movies, a widescreen TV makes them look great, but on others it still has black lines above and below the movie. Not to mention when you want a full screen movie or most television shows, the picture is either stretched or you have black lines on the left and right.

so you have to have a widescreen TV to get HD which is where entertainment in video is going these days

and you can barely even notice the stretched picture

after awhile you get used to it

TV show are starting to film in widescreen aspects and tv rules to world so its only a matter of time before full screen devices are obsolete. Thats what i think anyway

Ya most movies aren't filmed in the 16:9 aspect ratio, even though that is what most people say. Think about it when you go into most movie theatres, some older ones being the exception, the screen is definatly at least twice as wide as it is tall. And then if you play a widescreen movie in a widescreen tv, or for my my macbook which is widescreen, you still lose a good chunch of your screen to black bars. So widescreen if pretty much retarded because you still get stuck with the freakin black bars. I prefer full screen, just because I am used to it and other than my macbook have no widescreen screen, not worth the money to lose area of your screen. But yes to answer the actual question widescreen (the screens) are 16:9 while fullscreen is 4:3. As for the best theatrical experience it would be a widescreen movie (more original) and would be nicely complimented with a nice hd projector a nice big screen and thx certified sound. :P j/k but widescreen seriously, more true to the original theatrical version.

Here is a list of movies and stuff and all the various aspect ratios, some of them are even as high as 3:1. Good old google.:D
