I'm gonna try to fix up an old computer to make it usable. I'm inexperianced with computer hardware. What is the difference between a video card and a video chipset.

A video card has it's own GPU and RAM, so it improves graphics by not hogging the onboard RAM and CPU so much.

Never head of a video chipset. If you mean the chipset on the motherboard, they are what let the manufacturers put certain things on the motherboard, like a LGA 775 socket, AM2 socket, 3 PCI-E slots, AGP slot, etc.

What's wrong with the computer?

i think by chipset he means IGP.
like the intel 950s and geforce 9300 etc.
these usually borrow ram from teh system to use as video buffer.
a dedicated video card would give you better perfomance. also, if the computer you're fixing doesn't have a video chipset, a video card would be your olnly option, as you can't just add a igp to a motherboard.
