Different PDF extensions?

Are there different PDF extensions that are essentially the same format? I want to open some of my pdfs with acrobat and some with an internet browser but don't want to reset assignments every time. I figure if it is seen as a different file type I can split that up.

The way it works is if you open a pdf file that is already on your computer, it should open it in adobe. If you open a pdf file via internet browser, then the browser itself has a plugin that will view the pdf like chrome and firefox does.
