Different RAM MHz

I read somewhere that having different MHz will work and I'm sure it will. But I also read somewhere that it might cause some problems like BSOD and is not advisable.

I don't want to mix it up myself but there's a promo that if I buy the Corsair 2x8GB DDR4 2666 ($87) I will get free G.SKILL 2x4GB DDR4 2800 ($50)

Well, I was planning on just buying the Crucial 2x4GB DDR4 2133 for $45 but the other one has free stuff and more RAM!

This is for i5-6600k
 
Well, there is a ton of factors at play for whether or not the RAM would work in your PC (motherboard, the chipset, the socket type, BIOS features, etc...). As far as I know, there isn't any easy way to determine for sure if this configuration would work or not without finding someone to ask who has done the exact same thing with the exact same system specs and configuration.

Nothing would happen that would damage any of your components, but you could just simply wind up with RAM you can't use together, which is a tad wasteful.
  • You could install them and the motherboard could declare a memory failure due to the different frequencies.
  • You could install them and the motherboard could declare a memory failure due to an incompatibility of the two models.
  • You could install them and the BIOS could set them both to run at the speed of the lower of the two.
  • You could install them and everything would work perfectly.
My bet would be that, provided you've got a fairly modern system, the motherboard and BIOS will simply clock them both to the lower of the two frequencies and carry on like normal, but having not attempted this myself before, I can't be sure. That promo does sound like a good deal though. I would also be careful if you try the two sets, as having 24 GB of RAM might be over your max ram for the motherboard or the operating system.
 
Yep, you really can't be sure what would happen as it would depend on the motherboard ram compatibility.
