Different size memory sticks...

guys, to answer the question....you are running single channel now, so that wont change! The increase in ram will only help performance if you are using all the available ram you have now! What do you do now, do you browse the internet and use MS Office, or are you more of a gamer? I mean, what kind of applications do you use? Do you have multiple apps open at a time?

If he puts in 2 sticks in some of it will be dual channel, there's only 1 stick in there now. But even if for whatever reason it's not, unless you can sell the the 512MB stick you might as well add the 1GB anyway. Worst case you are running single channel but have 1.5GB which should speed things up a bit.

Exactly what I was trying to say!

I am running with 1.5 gb ram now and when i first start up the computer it says that the memory is running in dual channel asymmetric. what does this mean?

also i have everest home if you need me to look up anything about the ram

Dual channel asymmetric is what we were talking about earlier. It means that some of your RAM is running in dual channel mode.
