Different types of RAM...

Hi,

I'm thinking of getting another stick of RAM for my computer, I currently have two sticks of 256MB (PC2700) in there...

I was thinking of getting a stick of 1GB (PC3200 or PC2700) of a different brand...

Can I do this, or is it not recomended?

If I was you I would just get 1GB stick of PC3200 and leave it as that, then If needed get another stick of the same brand/model later on.

EDIT: You will have to check if PC3200 will work with a XP3000+ coz I cant remember :/

If not just get a 1GB stick of PC2700

What MOBO and chipset you using m8y?

Just ask this because I was speaking to someone about this not to long ago and the earlyr VIA chipests didnt work with PC3200 RAM and some did work but got no gains by using PC3200 RAM

Well there really isnt a difference between PC2700 and PC3200. Since all that is is the bandwidth rating (2.7gb/s and 3.2gb/s i believe). It really means nothing, i have PC3200 running over 6gb/s. But PC2700 should be DDR333 and PC3200 would be DDR400. If PC2700 works then PC3200 would work, but no there pry wouldnt be a performance increase, maybe a little.

I have an ASrock K7NF2...

I already have two 512MB sticks of PC2700, I was wondering if I could put in some PC2700 or PC3200 of a different brand?
 
from what I think I learned in my thread you can mix different brands but you want the timings and clock speeds to be as close to each other as possible to avoid any compatibility issue that might arise by not matching the sticks as closely as possible.

In terms of mixing 2700 and 3200, if you were to plop a 3200 stick in there with the 2700 stick the fastest the 3200 stick would run would be 2700, so if you are wanting to get faster overall ram you would have to let go of the 2700 sticks and just stick with the 3200 stick(s).
