Ok, so I have this big record collection of over 100 records, and I want to back them up onto an external hard drive. My turn table (that's what they're called right? They went out of fashion years before my conception) has an output chord that has a white and red end, like the ones that plug into TV's except without the yellow one. This plugs into my receiver.
My question essentially is is there an adapter for this into a USB so that I could put the music on my computer? What is it called?
And also, I want to do this operation through my Ubuntu Linux equiped laptop, what programs can I use to do this? I do have a desktop running WinXP in the other room, so it's less convenient but if there is nothing for Ubuntu I could use it.

But you can also hook up your turntable to your amp/reciever and run a rca cable to a rca to mini phono plug and plug it into the back of your sound cards input receptacle.


No matter which way you do it, you will need some software to help you get rid of pops and other unwanted sounds. There are a few programs you can use, but they are not cheap.

Is there anyway to do it under $25? Maybe $50? I don't have the money to buy a new turntable and programs to take out pops (I can live with the pops if it costs a lot, I can just buy a program later when I have a job- maybe 7 years from now).
 
You can buy a RCA to 3.5mm stereo converter, which costs like $5. Then you plug in the red/white cable from the turn table into the converter, then connect the other end of the converter into the line-in jack on your soundcard. Then you use an audio recording program and you should be good to go.

Thats what I was saying.


Here is a good program you can use for 10 recordings for free, after that the trial runs out and you either have to remove it or buy it. It's only $19.95 for a lite version if you like it.
