Dimension 3000 IDE to SATA?

A while back I mentioned that I was having drive issues with my D-3000 and I figured I have an entirely bad drive. I have been getting mixed results on this, so I need some help. I don't have any IDE drives to replace the old one, but I have some SATA drives. If I buy an IDE to SATA adapter, do I need anything else? Some places are saying the adapter is all I need, while some say I need a PCI SATA card. I'm coming back to this project because I have A TON of retro games lying around along with an unused copy of XP. The drive I want to use is a Seagate 1TB drive, from what I have seen there isn't a size limit. Thanks for the help!

You should be OK with just the IDE to SATA adapter, but you may need to partition the drive so the computer / Windows can use all the space. (it's been a while since I had to deal with older drives)

Well its working ish. The HDD is recognized but the CD drive is a PAIN! The HDD recognizes fine when in IDE slot 1, slot 2 I don't think works. I put a long IDE cable in there to hook both drives to slot 1 and now they BOTH aren’t recognized. Ive tried multiple cables, different cable orientation, and I even put a Promise Ultra 100 IDE card in it with no luck. Ive tried other CD drives also. Any ideas??? Ill work on it tomorrow.

I'm not sure this will work the way you want it to. However, make sure the cd drive is to slave on the second IDE cable, hopefully it has a jumper.

As per John ide was finicky with jumpers and cable position (or things like 80 pin vs 40 pin cables). Most later ide drives you could just put the jumpers on cable select and they’d automatically assign master/slave. If you have two devices trying to be the same role then it won’t work

Well, I got it to recognize both drives, but I had to swap the CD drive to a different one. Just so happens the different one is messed up even though it was brand new in the box from 1996. The tray keeps opening and closing at random and it has trouble reading disks. The CD drive I took out of it I think is dead because when it does try to read it clicks and does some weird stuff. I will find another drive eventually. Thanks for the help! I will return here if it messes up too badly. To get the drives to show up I set the HDD from Master to Master with Slave Present (I'm guessing that means the slave is on the same channel)

You really need to think about moving to a newer system, at least something with windows 10.

I do, this is going to be my retro gaming computer. I found a CD drive that wouldn’t fit with the faceplate on, but it works!!! Im installing XP right now! My signature is my main PC specs btw.
