I have heard that if you have 4 DIMM spots in your motherboard that it is bad to only fill 3 out of the 4, Is this true?

As far as i know, i don't think it matter with DIMMs, you should only be worried you have SIMMs or RIMMs.
Note:
RIMM modules must be installed in matching pairs, just like the old SIMMs, and you have to fill any unused sockets with dummy modules called Continuity RIMMs. DIMMs have no such restriction.
