Can you use a direct x 10 card without Vista?

My son has a Athlon 3800+ x2 with 2gbs of Ram and wants to play Crysis. He needs a video card but on has Xp. What would be the best card for him around $100 to $125?

he can use a DX 10 card on xp fine, and it will run crysis fine too, but to play DX 10 features you need to be running on vista (although maybe a service pack for xp will allow us to use DX 10 in xp in the future)

For that price range you wont get much, maybe an 8600GT but that wont play crysis very well

The MSI Diamond Radeon HD 2600XT is still seen for $135 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127305

That will play any of the games out at high settings and passes the Crysis requirement tests without spending $300 for a card. The problem being seen with DX10 compatible cards having hust come out in the last few months is the need for better XP drivers. I get this from people running 8600s and 8800s as well as ATI models.

Yes you can use a DirectX10 card on XP, however DX10 isn't supported on XP so it will revert back to DX9 mode - for the time being.

What Microsoft is doing now is including each new version of Direct X in Windows itself rather then seeing it as a separate download. Game designer will now have to enhance a newer form of DX9 provided with the installers to see DX10 effects work on XP.

But then there are some articles pointing that DX10 is do able on XP.

"DX10" possible in Windows XP for Crysis?

Well, that's what this person is claiming (thanks for the link, Arathorn!), so naturally I decided to give it a bash. Have a look at what you actually get.
Basically, what is being claimed is that one can copy all of the system settings in the config files from the Very High section into the High section - in theory, allowing the DX10-only effects to be used in DX9. So let's see then: http://www.yougamers.com/news/13605_dx10_possible_in_windows_xp_for_crysis/

Project aims to bring DX10 gaming to XP, Linux, OS X http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/pos...ms-to-bring-dx10-gaming-to-xp-linux-os-x.html

The old 2006 article seeing a rebadgered DX10 in the form of DX9L can be seen at http://www.theinquirer.net/en/inqui...irectx-9l-will-be-a-directx-10-for-windows-xp

A more recent July 2007 uses a few stronger terms and won't be quoted at http://www.theinquirer.net/en/inquirer/news/2007/07/11/dx10-is-do-able-on-windows-xp
