DirectX 9.0 Error (Posting to Correct Board)

Background Information: Not sure if this is relevant but about six months ago I contacted HP to verify my intended video card purchase would be suitable for my HP computer. They confirmed it would be suited for the PC so I purchased the card, GE Force FX 5500. About a week later when I was playing a game (that I played often in the past without the new card) the video card blew out, believe it overheated.

Anyway – I returned the video card and am now running on the onboard video (which I always used in the past). But now when I try to load the game I get the following error: "Failed to find any DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapters in this system! Please make sure you have a DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapter and have installed the latest drivers provided by the manufacturer. The application will now terminate."

I contacted HP and verified I have DirectX 9.0 but now all they can tell me is to bring the PC into a service center. Any ideas on this issue or any help to avoid the HP runaround would be appreciated!
