MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-850S ATA Device [CD-ROM drive]

My Laptop, details above, can record data to CD, but cannot read it.It cannot record data to DVD, but can read them.
Toshiba disc creator displays an error message (code 3803 81-26-2A 037303 ) which tells me the DVD is scratched/dusty/ dirty, even when they are new.

Any help gratefully received!

Just sounds like you have a faulty drive, replace it.

I think this only way and I agree with you . Once I had faced likewise same problem and I tried many options but I had to changed drive and my problem resolved .

Thanks for the replies. I'm guessing it will be expensive fitting a new drive in my laptop, and I rarely take it away from home so I'm thinking of getting an external drive- what pitfalls are there with this option? (even with my limited knowledge of computers I've learnt nothing is straightforward!)
