Disconnected screen and comuter has broken :)

I disconnected the screen from my parents (dell) pc to use it on my mates computer for a LAN gaming session.

When i plugged the screen back into my parents pc the screen worked till just after the windows xp loading screen.

I dont know what the problem is... seems there is no data after windows loading.

Parents are mad and need help!

Can you hear the computer starting up even thought there is no picture? Did you ever bump the monitor when you moved it?
 
didnt knock it... and PC boots up ok

The screen is fine, it displays the Windows loading screen and the boot process but the second the desktop should show up it cuts out and the light on the monitor goes orange (which i think means no data from pc)
 
well, that may be a monitor setting in windows, it might be sending the signal through a different port. Can you get into the bios and see if there are any display settings?
 
If you can, try another port, like a TV port to see if you can work your way in in order to re-enable the display. It could be just that thing.

OR, to simplyify it, uninstall and reinstall the ATI catalyst drivers or the Nvidia Forceware drivers in SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING.
 
YO... I dont know much about computers but i THINK I may know what's wrong.

If you have the ability to override the normal refresh rate and you set it too high, your monitor can blank out, that happened to me while testing refresh rates, but I kept my mouse above the cancel button so i could just click if it went blank... you have to find a way to change that, i'm not sure.
 
Ok, i think i know what your problem is. Are you sure you plugged the monitor in the same port when you disconnected it from? Is there any other places on your computer to plug that monitor onto? Try using another slot if you have any.

Fixed it, turned out that it was something to do with the settings on windows so i just spammed F8 on boot and, at the options menu, pressed 'Last known good configuration' and it works fine.

Thanks for all your help... once again a problem has made me learn a little more.

This can also happen if you set your display to a setting that your graphics card/inbuilt graphics can handle, but your monitor cant. Happened to me on my old computer
