Discs that just give you a download

Why the hell do they sell PC games in physical copies when they just make you download it via a client? Battlefield 3 was the same way, but it wasn't so bad since I waited tilt he next night to install it being I worked, but I just popped in Skyrim and steam has me at an estimated download time of 3 hours, which has now risen to well over 5 hours! That's such bullshit I got a physical copy for a reason.
 
BF3 wasnt a download it actually installs off disk.

So far the only game iv come close to doing this is homefront where you intsall one half of the game and download the other :P

I think what you are downloading is the update not the game, like in BFBC2 where it wont let you play the game until it is up to date, from the retail version this takes a while on BFBC2, I know that dice released a day 1 patch for it, so that is prob what is happening.
 
When I ran Skyrim there was no install menu it went straight into steam and started downloading a few GBs worth of data, doubt it was just a patch.

No, it wouldn't have been an update.. BUT you can install it from the disc =)

If it doesn't appear automatically just explore the disc and run the exe in there :P

My problem with the downloads is that if 1 file is bad it will try to download the entire game again. With skyrim 3 files failed to verify, which resulted in a 4gb download.

That's a bit odd, if coming from the disc I don't know why files failed to verify. Unless it was scratched or something :P
