Disk Drives Won't Work

This is my first post here, hopefully someone with better computer knowledge than I have can help me. :)

I'm running Windows XP and a few weeks ago out of the blue, my two disk drives won't work. There's one for CD's and another for DVD's/burner and if you put anything into them, they don't load. The computer doesn't even detect that they're there.

I've searched all over on google for a fix for this but I can never find a solution to this problem. Can anyone help?

Have you opened the computer up or anything like that? Unplugged the cables or something? This does seem weird because XP supposedly doesn't even need drivers to detect ROM drives.

Maybe the IDE cable has come out the motherboard side, this way both would stop being detected (if they are on the same IDE cable).

Thanks very much to both of you, I will definitely look into what you both suggested. I wish I wasn't such a newbie at the actual internal computer stuff. :P Webdesign, php and all that comes easily to me but telling me parts in the computer is...harder.
