Disk read Error.

Recently I had a problem with the computer faling to boot up. This happened when I tried to access 'hijack this'. I may have pressed the wrong button or something, anyway I am trying to repair it now.
I have now re installed Win 7 and that means I can access the computer properly now. However I am afraid that if I shut down 'disk read error' will re-appear and make the computer un usable. [ this happened before when I installed XP ]
My question, Is there any test I can carry out to check out if all parts are working properly while I still have a working Windows 7? All help appreciated.

Disk error means bad sectors on the hard drive, you can either run scandisk, or get a copy of hard drive Regenerator ...Hard drive Regenerator will scan for errors and try to fix them without hurting your OS.. it works good...

Thanks for the reply, I changed the hard drive before i installed 7 so really what i,m looking for is any checks i can do on the rest of the system before shutting down while i still have a working pc. Previously i had installed XP, on a different hd to cure the problem. used it for a short time then shut down. On start up i got the disk read error again so i was back to square one, It may be ok now but any checks?
