Display issue with 9400GT thru S-Vid

Hi there!

I've had this PC (Dell 8400 series) with the PNY 9400GT (1GB) hooked up to my "regular" television (38" Sony Trinitron) via S-Video for awhile. I brought it upstairs and hooked it up via VGA cable to a Sanyo 50" Plasma TV. I changed the display resolution to fit the widescreen plasma.

Now, I have it back on the 38" Sony via S-Vid, but this is what happens:

[YT]KXiIxF524jo[/YT]

The screen turns black and white and begins to scroll, horizontally.

The only way I can get the system to display properly, is if I :

1. Start the computer in safe-mode
2. Uninstall the display drivers
3. restart the PC in normal mode
4. Re-install the drivers without restarting.

After I reinstall the drivers, the system asks me to restart. When I do restart, the display problems begin immediately on startup. If I don't restart, the drivers are still detected by my games and allow me to play. Once I exit the game and return to Windows, the display begins to turn black and white and scroll again.

If I do not load a game and stay in Windows, the display will be normal, but turn black and white and begin to scroll after a few minutes to an hour.

What I've tried:

1. Setting the resolution (it seems to happen at every resolution I've tried).
2. I've been told it might be the Hz setting. The only selection I can find in either the Windows display properties or the Nvidia control panel is "60Hz".

Please! I need to play Oblivion! :D

Really? Is this one of those bizarre, unheard-of, "freak" issues to which no-one has even the slightest clue?

I've spent hours with the great oracle, Google. I've searched for such things as "Horizontal hold", "Scrolling", "Horizontal scrolling", "HHold Black and white" and dozens of other keywords to try to find a solution.

...

I would update the drivers. and there's no need to be sarcastic...

If the new drivers don't do it, i would say the card is faulty.

I tried updating to the latest drivers - same scenario.

I also tried rolling-back the drivers to an earlier release - same scenario.

The video card works fine (with both s-video and vga) on the 50" plasma.

The card works fine in VGA mode. It's when I install the video drivers and restart the computer that this begins to happen.

I mean, not that anyone cares, obviously ;)

It's the DRIVERS that causethe issue. No drivers, the card displays fine. I'm using it right now.

The problem is that in VGA mode, my software doesn't recognize the card (eg., games).

Sarcasm is NOT going to get you anywhere on this forum so drop it

First of all a 9400gt is a very low-end gpu and is most likely faulty

I would say its time for a new gpu

so, changing the resolution to match the sony on the other screen before switching didnt work?

but it worked before you put it to the plasma? that rules out the cable

got anything else to test the svideo on? always a possibility the card could have screwed on that port

I don't know if it's true or not but Nvidia S-Video outputs are generally crappy. I've had a few nvidias and half of them don't work right with the S-Video output. It would give me a black and white screen.

well ur resolution is too hight for a tv, you need it to be like 1024*786 or lower for it to work on a tv

Yes, it IS a black and white screen, in addition to the scrolling.

I don't appreciate you trash-talking my incredible GeForce (tm) 9400GT.

I'll do what the other guy suggested and maybe get an adapter of some-such-kind to try another port.

^^ For the price of an adapter you could pick up a new gpu for gosh sakes. You could pick up an 8600/9600gt for a mere $40 shipped or less

Edit: I just sold my xfx 8600gt for $37 shipped right after I bought a 9600gso for $50 shipped

Well worth the $13 I spent
