Disposal of damaged external hard drive

I have a Maxtor external hard drive (serving as a back-up) that has stopped spinning. I've replaced it and want to discard the HD, but I want to do so safely so the data cannot be retrieved (by someone much more resourcful than me).

What is the best way to dispose of this device?

Thanks,
Guy

 :D

I also have a dead drive i need to dispose off,Im going to grind away all the platters inside mine with a grinder till theres nearly nothing left of them :D

Then just chuck away the casing

It will be fun! :D

Like the bomb the best.
ive taken dvd, cd and platters on hd then scratch, rip, flex etc.
Only thing important is its always family, mine and private.
works for me.
forgot to mention a vise is fun and hammer.

You have to physically destroy it to the point in which it no longer resembles a HDD.

Saws, drills, sledgehammers, and some acid sounds fun.
