Dividing bandwidth usage

Hey there,

There's 4 people in my flat and we are on a 20gb plan per month. We are trying to find a way to divide the bandwidth usage so that each person is limited to only 5gb per month out of the 20gb plan.

Does anyone know how to do this? My friend said it my be something to do with networking but I somehow don't think so.

We're using cable by the way if that helps. Cheers :)

I know there is software to control the max transfer rate but I'm not sure if there is anything to cut you off when you hit 5GB of total traffic. If you do a search for bandwidth management you will find lots of software to limit transfer speeds.

I have no experience with this software but it says you can set a "quota" for users and I suppose that would work.

It seems though, it only works when your computer is set up as the server (i.e. you would need a server OS, two network cards, and a switch).

If you trust your roommates then you can set up http://www.dumeter.com/main.php on each of their comps. It monitors bandwidth activity but won't stop them from exceeding a limit. It can email you though if they reach a certain point.
