This is a part of a series of DIY Computers.
----------------

First you will need a following:

Cardboard Box
-Piece of Clear Flat Sturdy Material (ie. Glass, acrylic, plexiglas)
-Paper (ie. printer paper, tracing paper, almost any paper)
-Webcam or Video Camera (Any webcam should work)
-Optional Picture Frame

Requirements:
Computer running XP or Linux prehaps

Total Cost: 5$/Euro - 50$/Euro ETC basicly you will almost get it for under 50 Anything.

--------Setup----------

Get your piece of clear flat meterial (Mentioned above) And Cut the sheet of paper to fit the glass and tape it using clear tape. (Not making the sticking too much as it will result in a bad touch pad later on. Get your cardboard box tape the flaps up if needed to make box taller. Cut a hole through the box so a USB 2.0 or DV Camera Cable could fit through. Place the camera in the box and making sure its facing upwards (Where the camera its self is) So if you plugged it in you would see your self. And tape it to the box. Pull the cable through the hole you made and make sure it wont fall back in the box. (If you have a webcam thats Cord powered(As in a way you would power a pc make a cut for that) Place the glass with paper on the top of it and tape it(Again make sure it will stick but don't over do it) or put the glass on a frame and just tape the entire frame onto the box(Suggested). Now plug the webcam into the computer and install your web cam drivers (If not done) Then download the multi track pad application from here http://nuispace.com/ss/MTmini package v1.zip . Install it and boom your off. Check out this video:

I have always wanted a multi touch display type thing. Your idea is nicely planned out, the only problem is that (besides being a little confusing) it requires a darkened box. Ive seen ideas from using a wii-mote (you cant make this up!) to IR light. As soon as I find an old LCD that is easy to take apart I intend to make my own version :D.

Wii-mote
Giant multi touch
Box version
You get the jist ;).

Seth Sandler has updated his instructions and software in order to make it easier for people to follow. Check out his blog post here: http://ssandler.wordpress.com/mtmini/. I built one and it's not too hard. Not counting the time to download the software, I'd say it takes about 30 minutes to get everything together the first time. If you do build one, my advice is to try out the demo_smoke.exe program first. It's easy to use.

In terms of the darkened box, this isn't a big deal. You do need some kind of light external to the box, however, that is bright enough for your fingertips to cast a shadow on the paper.

So I built one today and find that it's pretty hard to use at home, as the lighting is not even. Otherwise it's really fun to play with!

Yeah, I built about a day ago and its rather tricky to get it to sense correctly. It probably didnt help that my camera kept shutting off every 15 seconds >.<! Im disappointed in the software though. I tried to reverse the process, it normally senses by seeing the darkest part (the tip of your finger) and placing the tracking blob there. But I was working in the dark trying to get it to put the blob on a flash light and it didnt work. I may try some other programs if I were to build a better version sometime in the future. Still fun :D.
