DIY LCD display, possible?

I just got a bit of a strange idea while I had my cellphone (Nokia 3510) open for some cleaning, damn dust. I was thinking about getting an old cellphone, rip out the LCD display and try to connect it to my computer via a COM-port. It shouldn't be impossible to do but it would take quite a lot of time. Or has it been done already, I could do it even if somebody has done it but I just wanna know.

Im sure it is possible.

1.It has a controller and you can then just wire it to your port and write a program.
2.It doesnt have a controller where you either
1a.Make your own.
2a.Buy one.
And then wire it up and make a program.

Try googling around a bit and see if anyone has succesfully done it. Altough its not really worth it. You could get a lcd of that size with a controller and a program already made for about 6 bucks at some electronic store.

I know it probably isn't even worth it, but then again if it hasn't been done I would be the first one to do it :P. I was thinking of the possibilities when using such a LCD display, sure the text would be a bit small but you could have the battery thingy on the side show CPU usage and the signal thingy show memory usage or even have one of them show how much the PSU is working.

True, I do enjoy doing stuff when you could do it 10 times easier. I hope your project works.

So do I, I'll start planning how to do this after I get my DIY metronome done by combining two "projects" I did during my electronics course at school.
