I want my new rig to be my gaming/media center for my home entertainment system. im looking at the ati 4870x2, and want to use the adapter to go from dvi to hdmi. Will this carry sound? or must I add a sound card?

Any card with a component out (s-video) will output sound. However, I think something must be connected from the card to the motherboard for it to carry sound.

All ATi 4 series support sound through HDMI, according to ATI offical website.

my HD3870 outputs sound to my TV when I hook it up using an HDMI Cable and the provided DVI to HDMI Adapter.

All I can remember is that you need to plug some cord into your mother board then onto your card(Sorry for being so general) with Nvidia i'm not so sure about ATI :)

You're looking for an audio loop cable. As far as I know, almost all cards are capable of streaming audio through HDMI using this cable.

The white plug plugs into the video card, the black plugs hook up to the SPDIF output on your motherboard or sound card. Then all you need is a DVI-HDMI adapter and you can steam audio to your TV. If you have a specific video card model I can confirm if it's supported. Most video cards include this loop cable in the box.

ATI 48XX series and quite possibly the 46XX/47XX series will output sound through HDMI with no additional hookups, just newish drivers and you're set.

a bunch of the newer cards have that, if you use the dvi to hdmi adapter and hookup the cable to your spdif jack on your mobo, it will carry the sound through the hdmi. my old bfg 8800gts g80 even had that. haha
