Do display port adapters work?

I picked up a hdmi to display port adapter to use with my monitor in place of the VGA cable but the comp doesn't recognize there being a monitor connected. It's a newer monitor, Asus vn247h-p. It has two hdmi ports and a VGA.
 
I have three monitors hooked up, one through hdmi, one through dvi, and the third through vga. i want to hook it up through display so I got the adapter.
 
I had the same issue with mine..i had my 50inch tcv hook up through display port and my moniter through hdmi, but i got it to find the tv but no sound would come through it untill i updated my video card drivers to the most recent amd catalyst drivers and now it works
