Hello forum, I have a strange problem with my desktop PC, every application opens in notepad. THis just started suddenly but not sure what caused it.

It is almost like someone went in and set all .exe files to open with notepad.

If anyone has ever seen this please respond. I am hopeing I dont have a virus but it sure looks that way.

Ok, well that worked, thank you very much. The only thing I see thats still wrong is that almost all my icons on my desktop still seems to have the notepad icon.....or at least I think that its the icon for notepad.
 
Have you rebooted the system yet? Please do so if you haven't yet. Then report back.
 
Then its just a matter of right clicking on the icons and clicking on properties, click on the shortcut tab, click on change icon button and hopefully you should have the right icon in the box somewhere and then select it.

Ok just went to the desk top again and they are restored, go figure. So what caused this mess in the first place.
 
Did by chance you try to open something with notepad recently and leave the box checked that said open all files with this program?

Here is my procedure for running scans on your system.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware


Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

Thanks, John fixed me up, everything is running better than before now. This forum is great, I thought I was going to have to wipe it.

I highly recommend uninstalling the following programs.

Uniblue RegistryBooster
Advanced Registry Optimizer

These programs usually cause more problems then they solve. If you want a general registry cleaner, you can use Ccleaner.

Ccleaner is a good temporary internet and temporary system file cleaner and will bring speed back to your system.
