Do i need a Gigabit NIC?

Currently, have Fast ethernet (100mbps) card, and wondering if i need a Gigabit network card. I remote control PCs sometimes using UltraVNC SC, and it's a bit slow. Will a Gigabit NIC speeds things up? Or does the remote user ALSO need Gigabit, too?? Some help would be great.

Thanks in advance.

If you're doing local networking then both computers would need gigabit cards to get the advantage. I know some motherboards come with built in gigabit NIC's.

Yes if you will run local network with Gigabit when it is ok, but if you want to have gigabit access to your internet when you should check your internet provider (but I do not believe that they support gigabit speed)

You don't need gigabit connections to use VNC, if it's running slow then chances are it's caused by something else.

My friends PC is NOT connected to my local network (LAN), but i connect to it via the internet (WAN)? using UltraVNC SingleClick. I dunno how fast my computer needs to be, it's a laptop, HP DV1000, Pentium M 1.6 mhz. I also have encryption enabled in UVNC SC, but it's barely faster withoUT it. I do NOT any spyware on my laptop, either.....

Then that would be the issue, the bottleneck is your internet connection. Upgrading your LAN would not effect that.

lol a gigibit network connection? good luck asking your ISP for a OC12/24 connection ... at probaly 100k+ a month.

No adding a faster nic wont help with vnc .... it's just the latency of your/his internet connection.

He was asking about a gig NIC, not a gig internet connection.

I have Time Warner Cable standard up to 10 Mb down/1.0 Mb up, and my friend's got At&t DSL 1.5 Mb down/0.3 Mb up. Does the fact he's 60 miles away from me make any difference?? What's the point of getting a gigabit NIC, then? How fast of an internet connection do i need for VNC?

There is no point, your bottleneck here is the ISP. Since you cannot upload anymore than 0.3mb/sec then changing the local interface to 1Gb will do nothing.

0.3mb/sec is quite slow and im not suprised vnc is sluggish, I would look at upgrading this since its going to be your bottleneck.

I'm about to make the jump. I purchased a new router with a gigabit switch. Sometime today I'm going to confirm my capable computers are connected to the router and the others connect to a switch. I'll see what my throughput is and maybe post back with an update.

Though for the most part, I doubt there'll be any real difference. The improvements would only be noticeable across the network. Most of my activity(and I'm sure most everyone elses) is online. What I do locally is covered by my NAS which isn't exactly the fastest device :P
