Do I need a laptop?

I'm currently a sophomore in high school. Next year my family is going to travel to Vietnam to celebrate New Year with family and friends from over there. I was thinking about buying a laptop to do school work while on the plane and or at someone's house that has internet. Since I take 2 honor classes and one AP class this year, I think I will have to do a lot of researches online. But, after that I'm not going to travel anywhere else in the next two years, therefore I'm not sure if I should get a laptop or not. I know that I will need one for college later on, and by that time it will be cheaper and have more features too. If I should, please tell me if this laptop I list at the bottom will last until I graduate college (sorry, my family is not that rich), if not please suggest some. I'm looking for one that will last long and will be great for college and movie, and also long battery life. Please answer as soon as possible, because it's almost Black Friday ^_^.

The laptop I wanted : Dell XPS 15 - $849.99

HP also has some good laptop too, but I heard people said it gets heated easily :/

PS: Please no laptop over $900.
PSS: I need a laptop that will last for a LONG time and has long battery life (about 4 hrs+?)
PSSS: I'm going to be gone for 4 weeks.
PSSSS: My PC still work pretty good, but I can't view ppt nor make one.

Thank you for answering. But I'm looking for a laptop that has big screen, because my eyes hurt when I look at small front and I also want the keyboard to be big and not tiny. I don't mind buying one of the newest model, but it has to last for at least 4 yrs and has high performance. :)
I don't like Asus much, because lots of ppl saids their screen graphis aren't that nice. :?
PS: The key is will it last until my 2nd yr of college ^_^

Your buying a good laptop. your good to go. I also like toshiba.
one suggestion is if in the states now wait until Friday. the deals will be on.
Ive had several laptops in the past. Make sure you read the instructions carefully about maintaining the battery. stuff like don't leave it on the charger 24 hrs a day. get a good protective case if ya don't have one.
look for a deal with a recovery disc so ya don't have to buy it later.
cheers....

Ah Thanks^^ But the thing about this laptop is the battery only last for about 3hrs... My family just moved to U.S. about 5 yrs ago, and so I'm the first one in my family who's going to college after HS (in US). Therefore, I don't know how the college classroom will be like, for example, do they hav a lot of outlets for you to charge your laptop? And what about the library? If yes, then I don't hav to worry about that problem anymore. :) But if not, then I think I will have to look for a new one. :(

i don't know. i graduated in 1964. all my education is done. my kids had them. im sure that option was available. worse case, a spare battery deal.

funny ya brought that up. ive been on maybe 15 cruises so far. family is talking next year Vietnam or Africa. it will happen. gotta love an adventure. been to Nam enough times but not for a pleasure cruise.

How long the battery lasts depends on your power settings and what you do on the laptop. I honestly don't know what the 3 hour rating is for, but I'm guessing thats for balanced performance. If you set it on power saver it will last longer. And besides, if need be, buy a second battery

@Troncoso: Good point, on the website it said 5 hrs and 45 mins... But I guess that is when its in stand by mode? Would you recommend this laptop for a college student (weight 5. sumthing lbs)? Do you know what type this laptop use? Thanks

I just glanced at these specs and I noticed they have a stronger battery for up to 9 hours. That may be more up your alley. Besides that this laptop is great. beyond the physical shape I'd love to have it myself.

IMO, Asus is the best laptop brand to buy from right now. Their build quality is among the best in the business, if not THE best. They also usually have very good performance for the price, and their warranty is unmatched anywhere. For the first year, they cover accidents...you break it, they'll fix it.

@Drenlin: Please suggest some models for movie, school work and decent battery life (4 hrs or more). And what do you think about the XPS 15?
