Do I need a large HDD?

I used to collect vintage computers, mostly old IBM stuff but also had some Tandy and Compaq computers. All the computers in my collection predated Windows. A couple of years ago, I decided that my collection (about 30 in total) took up too much space so sold it all off.

I know that "back in the day" it was the case of buying the biggest HDD you could afford, but these days it is more important to have a good processor and a reasonable amount of RAM.

So, with that in mind how big a HDD do I really need? I would be buying a PC with Windows 7 (may upgrade to 10 in the future) and at least 4GB of RAM. I use Onedrive for storage of documents/storage and do not store anything else on the actual hard drive other than maybe 100 photographs maximum.

For example the HP ProBook has a 111GB HDD and of that I have used 26.5GB which includes the OS and two user accounts.

What I want to know is the minimum free space required to run Windows 7 (and in the future 10) smoothly.

When choosing an HDD it needs to be suitable for your usage. I think that 1TB is all good for today's use

I recently bought a new laptop that came with a 1TB hdd. I immediately replaced that hdd with a 240GB ssd. I prefer the speed of the ssd and it is plenty big for my use but I only keep data files on the laptop (documents, spreadsheets, program source files, etc...) which don't take a lot of space to store. The stuff that takes up lots of storage is media files like movies & music and modern games can require lots of space. So if you need to store media files and games on your computer then you will require a larger disk.

I keep almost all of my large files on a server on my network.

Same here, seems the most sensible approach anyway.

Ours just has compressed archives of anything needed like Steam games, etc. They run OK over the network but even for games with many small files and a 512k chunk size, there's a gigantic amount of file system/RAID overhead by hosting that on the server directly :P
