Do i need a new fan? CPU runs at 80C!

Hey,
I am new to this forum and i need some assitance.

For a while now my computer keeps freezing (meaning i have to reboot it) when i play demanding video games such as Call of Duty 4 and PES 2008, and I couldnt work out what was the problem. However when im on the internet or doing normal things it doesnt.

I had a look at loads of problems, then i came across on my bios it says that my cpu is at around 80C then i was shocked to read on other sites that the ideal CPU temperature is 40C-50C, and i deduced that the problem is that the CPU temp is too hot and the computer is freezing to stop it from overheating.

If i urgently need a new fan, because i have been using the stock fan that came with my processor, please tell me and would anyone care to recommend a particular fan?

My Set Up is:
AMD 64 3800+ (2.4Ghz
Nvidia 8600GTS
Windows XP
2GB Memory
Soundmax HD Audio

I'm not the one to reccommend a fan to you but looking at your setup it is not overclocked so the stock cooling should have no problems with your CPU at full load. I would look to see if the fan is running at speed and not clogged up with dust, in fact a good general clean out and if it all looks good then perhaps the thermal paste needs to be reapplied.
 
Hey Dave

I've had the stock fan in for around 1-2 years now and it runs consistantly at around 2700RPM, also i cleaned it a few weeks ago fom all the dust and stuff yet the tempertaure is still around 80C at full load!
On the CPU power monitor i have from AMD it says that the frequency is operating at 2400MHz - so it hasn't been overclocked, plus my bios settings are at default settings.

What should i do?

Like said above, try reapplying the thermal Compound, 80C is hot for a AMD. What kind of air flow does your case have (as in fans).

I hav never used thermal compound, because i didn't really think it was that important, however how significantly can thermal paste reduce the temperature?
Plus i hav a fan for the cpu as standard, case fan and a fan for the power and thats it, am not sure in terms of air flow though
 
I,m sure that when you installed the stock heatsink that you left the preapplied compound in place. It can lose its effectiveness over a period of time and can be reapplied with some quality compound. Plus case air flow can really help with temps. Fans pulling in cool air from the lower front and side and exhaust from the top back and top of case if there a fan outlet there.
