Im running windows XP not sure if it’s home or pro edition. Anyways I have things in my start up I may not want there. Do they need to be there (does the computer need them?) “Adobe Gamma loader” and “PowerReg Scheduler” What are those even? They have been there since I go the computer… I am just looking for a faster startup. Can I delete them?

thank in advance

You dont need adobe gamma loader, i dont know what PowerReg is so i cant really say.

Windows doesnt need anything in the "startup" tab in msconfig, but if you have software such as antivirus, display utilities, ect, they may need those files.

Okay I was talking about when I click Start, all Programs then there is a little icon that says startup, I only have 3 things there. (“Adobe Gamma loader”, “PowerReg Scheduler”, and “Secret maker”) Secret maker which I want to keep.

But I also see those programs and more (about 20 in all) in the “system configuration utility” which I got to by putting msconfig into the run command, I never knew there was such a thing as “system configuration utility”.

Any ways is there anyway to find out on the net what I need for start up and what I don’t?

On another note, I also see programs in the “system configuration utility” that I no longer have I Uninstalled it 6 months ago? It does not give me an option to remove only to deselect it from start up.

What should I do about all the above?

Sorry if this is getting tedious but I need to figure this out. Or do I? start up takes several minutes.

Running 2.6ghz Celeron D 256k ram

Thank you for any help sorry this is so long…

Get a registry cleaner to remove the bad/stale registry entries. There are freeware ones you can try, do a search on google.

Personally, I also use YourUninstaller!2006 to remove all traces of programs I want to uninstall.

Just always be careful when doing something with the System Configuration Utility. Do a google search to find out exactly what the application does before deselecting. There are a lot of guides in the net giving advice on what is needed at Startup but for me the better choice is deciding by yourself. That's because enabling programs at startup depends on personal tastes and individual hardware.

If you've got Adobe Reader Speedlaunch, deselect that too.
