Do I need more ram ?

As the tiltle says , I installed VM yesterday to try out Windows 7.
It runs very sluggish and I´m wondering if I have enough ram to run VM and my system.
I assigned 1.5 gig of ram leaving 500 for system. (Which was idle while trying VM.) Should I buy another 2gig . I´m only running XP pro.
Ram prices are so low it´s not the cost, just whether my system could benefit from this increase.

I also run some games(need for speed underground, Dirt ) , video encoding, music transcoding. (Not in VM)
TIA

Well 7 is much like Vista so I would say having a extra 2GBs wouldn't hurt it.

I doubt 7 uses only 500mb since even a fully tweaked Vista is 800 or so. Also your PC will never cap out memory...always seems to float 250mb below the limit.

Thanks , I think I´ll go and pick up another 2 gigs. I´ve been reading also that XP only recognizes three gigs ,is this true? I mean it wont hurt having that extra gig floating around for when I decide to upgrade to a newer OS.
Also are there benifits to buying 4 x 1 or 2 x 2gig sticks ? I have dual channel.
4 slots.

xp 32bit can only see 3.5(?) gig ram, but like you say, ram is cheap.

Ram always used to be faster if it was spread out across all the slots (certainly in my experience, and I'm sure it was fact too...), so that logic would see 4x1gb being quicker, but it could be pricier, the benefit would probably be minimal, and it denies future upgrades (sortof).

So what about 1 x 2 gig + 2 x 1 gig (already on board) I imagine this combo will also do? or 3 x 1 ?

17 euro 1g hyper-x 800 here .

This is what I have:
KHX6400D2/1G, ,

1GB DDR2 800MHz

Non-ECC CL5 5-5-5-15 2.0V
Does it matter if I mix the latency , 555 with 444 ?
and does that 2.0 v mean that I can bump it in the bios to that voltage.

At the moment The DRAM frequency is sitting on 326.5 in CPU-Z.
Voltage is at 1.89 according to speedfan.
Forgive all the questions, I´m still learning when it comes to Ram.

Your issue isn't your RAM. Your running software in a VM which means it's gonna have additional overhead and run slower. And if your using the Microsoft Virtual PC then anything ove XP is going to be sluggish no matter what you do due to the hardware it "shows" to the OS.
