Is there any special preparations I need to do before installing a new card, like uninstalling the current drivers or anything else?

Yes. I'm not too experienced in this department, but if I recall correctly you got to Control Panel - Device Manager - View Hardware and Devices. Then, you go to Display adpaters, click on properties and uninstall your current drivers then install your new ones

Yeah i would clean them out. it depends on whether you are going from ati to ati, nvidia to ati, nvidia to nvidia or ati to nvidia:

Ati card to Ati card: download the latest drivers, launch the installer and select uninstall. let it do it's magic, reboot and install the new ones.

Ati card to Nvidia card: Use DriverCleaner Pro (free) to clean out all ati drivers, then download latest drivers and install

Nvidia card to Nvidia card: Same as above.

Nvidia card to Ati card: Same as above.

Download the new drivers and save them. Go to add and revove and uninstall the old drivers, can use a driver cleaner but not needed most of the time. Shut down, replace the card, boot up and install the new drivers you saved.
