Do I really need a firewall

I just replaced my hard drive and I'm trying to decide whether to install a firewall. I found it slowed my computer down noticeably, in addition to endless annoying alerts, which were NEVER of anything actually dangerous, with my last computer and I'm wondering what the real risks are of just doing without one. I was running Comodo, and would probably just go with it again.

I'm not managing databases of credit card numbers or anything, just the usual typing and surfing stuff. So would it be very reckless to just do without firewall?

I wouldn't recommend not having a firewall on. Just use Windows firewall, it shouldn't slow anything down.
 
I'm using a Windows Firewall too and that's not very smart. If you think Comodo is too paranoid then I won't even recommend ZoneAlarm. However, you can try with Kerio.

i think comodo firewall doesn´t makes your computer slow, cause i have this firewall and it's very good.i think zone alarm makes the computer more slower than Comodo.

If you are connecting to the internet via your home router than there is absolutely no need of a firewall (Routers already have one). But turning on your windows firewall should be more than enough.
 
I have Zone alarm and it doesn't slow my computer down at all. I think it works WAY better then Windows Firewall. Just my opinion perhaps. I've never had spyware or virus problems but I play everything super safe lol.;)

Absolutely Wrong, a Router only protects you from most (but not all) direct attacks but doesn't prevent spyware,adware,viruses,trojans etc that you can pickup from downloading, visiting many sites, email, AIM and other applications.

I personally recommend having a hardware and software firewalls, also programs like spybot, ad-aware, anti-virus,hijackthis etc are a must these days for Windows users.

How much memory does XP SP2's firewall take up? I know it's a POS so i'm looking for one that blocks outgoing connections. Which ones use the same, or much preferably, less memory than it?

Windows Firewall uses less than 800k of memory, most (if not all) add-on software firewalls use much more.

i never used to bother with firewall software,i just let the standard windows firewall do its job.

however i now use Kaspersky internet security suite and it has one so i use that.

its very good and doesnt keep giving you annnoying pop ups every minuite.
 
All I'm using is Windows Firewall and only got a virus once out of the years that I've had a computer. I have PeerGuardian for that extra protection as well.

Wow. that's next to nothing. I hope you're right, i might as well stick with it then. Jetico Personal Firewall takes up 5000K, i believe that's the least-resource consuming firewall i know, unless i'm mistaken. Is there ANY other way i can obtain outbound protection withOUT upgrading my firewall?
