Do magnets effect CD's or PSU's?

Hey, I have a big Denver Broncos magnet (Go Broncos!), and I was wondering if it is harmful to either the PSU or the CD drives/CD's DVD's? Could it harm anything sitting on the top of my computer case? Thanks a lot,

no, only the hard drive or floppys. it depends on the distance. how close is it from the top of the case to the hard drivse?
 
Its best to not have magnets of any strength anywhere near any part of a computer, in PSU's tyhere are electromagnetic coils, not sure if that would do anything, in CD/DVD drives there are motors, in a motor there are of course magnets, first rule of voltage induction. Obviously HDD's are extremely sensitive to magnets. dont even go near your PC with one. Flopys are sensitive but not very, only the actual disks are. and theres hardly ever a disk in my floppy drive.

CD's use "pits" on the disks rather than magnetically charged spots, so CD's can not be harmed by magnets. I guess anything electrical can, so the PSU as mentioned possibly could be, but a CD is basically just a peice of plastic ;P
 
Alright, thanks a lot for the help guys. I just wanted the magnet in my room somewhere, but I guess I'll have to compromise and go to the fridge.

I have placed my HDDs in my PC one over the other, do they need a big space between each other so they don't get de-magnetized?

Unless you have a high tech refrigirator that serves the food that it knows you like and (go knows why) its got an HDD to record all that info.
Dont magnets harm HDD's by spining the disks inside and therefore scratching it?

No point taking a risk. Maybe its not powerful. Go for vinyles and stickers. Those cant be harmful...

HDDs will not harm eachother since the magnetised part is the disk, there isn't a magnetic field resonating around the HDDs. The only problem that could be had when having HDDs close together is heat generation, it is best to have a space between your HDDs for better airflow and cooling, this ensures healthy HDDs.

Youve obviously never seen corporate server rooms, if they affected each other they'd be screwed.

Well there is a 2 cm space between them, is that enough? I dont wanna screw up me HDDs.

Yeh, that'll be fine, basically, if the case makers put them that close together then it will be fine, they wouildnt make something thats gonna screw you up so bad as to cause a fire from heat....

Not necessarily a fire but you would NOT want to put two 15k RPM drives right next to eachother. Older drives are fine next to eachother but newer drives can go faster and produces much more heat which could cause a HDD failure or shorten the life of it.
 
It'll ussaly be fin,e, but if you can its best to have a space inbetween them, or install a fan blowing to them.
