Do not overestimate my Mobo knowledge.

My knowledge of motherboards consists of the fact that they are often called mobos. That is ALL.

So when I ask this question, PLEASE do not spare me any definitions, any rules, any commonly known facts because I can assure you that I am as newbie as they come.

I am an avid gamer when it comes to playing the games, not when it comes to building the computer to play them. Two years ago I bought a stock dimension E520 dell desktop (yeah, i know. Lol.) I've since then replaced the video card and got another stick of ram. It came with vista 32-bit (I didn't have a choice really, trying to get my hands on some XP)

I have a 8600GT nvidia card in there now, but that's not enough. No problem, I bought a 9800GTX nvidia card. To go along with that I bought a 3 Ghz intel core 2 duo. Oh man, now we're cookin. I don't trust myself with installing processors so I took it to best buy. (Yeah, i'm techie nub) While they had it open I was just going to install the card myself.

My mobo can't handle the processor and the 9800GTX won't fit either. (gotta get a new case, but luckily even I can figure that out for myself)

Anyway, tl;dr version:

I need a motherboard for a gamer that can handle a 3 Ghz intel core 2 duo processor and a 9800GTX nvidia video card. Other relevant system specs available at request.

Thanks a LOT guys/girls, I really appreciate your patience and ability to get through the wall of text. And as the title says, don't assume I know anything about motherboards because I have NO idea. Any information you want to volunteer would be greatly appreciated too.

So you are buying a new case? Whats your price range on the board. Chances are your stock Power Supply is going to have a hard time running that 9800GTX.

Oh no, i've got a 750 watt power supply lined up to handle that honkin' card.

I game a LOT, so my price range is pretty wide. I don't want anything TOO massive, but I'm fine with paying up to $500 for a badass mobo

Oh shit..

Take a look at the mobo in my sig..

Asus Rampage Fomula x48....it's less than 500 and very badass.

It comes with a HD sound card which is very good! Has 45nm processor capability, so your intel cpu with work perfectly. Did you get an e8400? e6850?,,

You vid card will be perfect in there..

You need a case...again I will recommend a very popular one...Antec 900 Gaming chassis.

750W power supply is awesome!! perfect choice!!

Maybe wanna pick up a wireless pci card..?

Disclaimer: Please feel free to call me a dummy.

I saw that on newegg.com, but its an intel chipset and not a nvidia chipset. Will that cause problems?

The cpu is e6850.

I actually already have that case being shipped to me :P

Talk to me more about this wireless pci card?

Your not a dummy man, dont worry bout that.

Your e6850 cpu will work great on the rampage mobo.

Excellent choice on case--you will love it. build quality is great, and cooling solution is awesome.

Wireless card is nice because if you are like me,,less wires is better.

Linksys has a nice one for around 30-40 bucks plugs into a pci slot--put on the software, setup your network and you are online with no wires.

What about the chipset question? That won't cause compatibility problems?
EDIT::

Shit sorry I blanked...yeh you are right that will not work with ur video card..

Man I'm slow tonight...been up for hours...thats one reason i dont call people dummy's

You could look into an Asus Striker 2 mobo with 780 or 790 chipset.

They run around 300 bucks and there is a few different Strikers.

Depends if you want ddr2 ram ddr3 ram..and a variety of other options.
support for sli and 3-sli/hybrid

I don't need sli, I think the 9800GTX will be enough for me :P

I believe the 3 gigs of ram I have now is DDR2.

Now the guy at Best Buy told me I need a 775 Socket for my cpu. Do these strikers have that?

You dont have to do sli but the board will have that option if you change your mind or sell it.

DDR2 is great..you may wanna pick up one more stick for 4gb total.--are you running 32-or 64 bit operarting system?

Yepper 775Socket your all good!!

32 bit vista

Lets see here, what else did that best buy guy say....

"PCI-E x16"

No clue. Does it have it? Also, can you do me a HUGE favor and link me to this mobo on newegg? I really don't trust myself to say "hmm, this looks like what he's talking about, let me drop 300 on it"

Also, I'm trusting you to tell me what to do here so if you're not sure on anything, please let me know :P

PCI-E x16 yes...both card slots will be this type to install your video cards.

I won't link to newegg, only because I am part of a competing business but I'm sure someone else will...sorry!

Too be fair though and follow forum rules--I'm not allow to link my own site either so people cant accuse me of anything...lol..

You can certainly trust me on parts, but I will highly recommend to do some research and compare. The board I suggested is one option for you, based on the few things you mentioned. The Strikers are a higher-end gaming oriented mobo--if you want something different or cheaper let me know.

you may find something else that you like better, or is cheaper, or maybe a different make altogether.

My opinion is..if you want top-end quality and excellent support..you will not go wrong with ASUS.

Yeah, I've heard ASUS is serious business. Thanks a lot for your help, I'll certainly look into it.

Thanks for abiding by forum rules, I'll certainly do some research of my own.

Please do and post some findings here....once people wake up and log on you will get many more opinions.

I'm happy to help with any more questions.
