Do PCI-E slots come off?

I would go with a P35 motherboard, you can get a very nice mid-ranged P35 motherboard for around $70-$90. The one in my sig has been fantastic!

As for the processor, many of the new Intel CPU's are well below the 2.8GHz mark. I would recommend the E8400 if you can afford a $200 CPU, otherwise I'd go with one of the Core 2 Duo series in the 2.4-3.0GHz range.
 
i can only afford the GIGABYTE GA-P31-S3G though.. what do you think for a good dual core maybe a mid jump from the 2.2amd athlon x2 4200+ i dont wanna get the same processor speed. everything will fit in a centurion 5 though right? 8800gt the gigabyte mobo, and my previous drive bays.
 
a good jump from the amd you had? a good jump would be an e2160, those overclock to around 2.8GHZ or higher on the stock heatsink. that would totally destroy your last processor, since 2.8 with an intel is a lot better then 2.8 with an AMD at the moment.

By the way, a 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo will outperform your 2.2GHz X2.
 
nope. it will work better. and you can overclock it easily to 2.5ghz, even 2.8 ghz.

so it will own it :)
 
So uh, yeah which processor am i getting? im definently getting the 75$ mobo. what model is it again? i need both the processor and the mobo plz kevsa

annnnd do i need to buy an ethernet network adapter or something for the pci? my internet uses ethernet and not usb

On "How It's Made," the other day... they showed how boards were made on the wafers (don't know what they were making), but a lot of the slots and sockets are just pushed in by a tech person after most of the major components and structure of the board is made. It was interesting...
 
How far can you get into bios? can you play around in it? If so, make sure that it is detecting everything (hard drives, cpu, optical disk drives...bla bla blah)

if i were you i would just unplug the power cord from the computer, and then you will find a small silver battery in the motherboard, take it out and wait 30 seconds, then put it back in. this will reset the bios and probably wont help. but you may as well try :)
