Virtual memory saved my ass on my old dell with 256 mb of RAM. I was running a 3 Gb PF :P

I dont know how many I'm running right now but its XP default.

i've got 1 gig actual ram, then 1.5 virtual, plenty for me and i#ve never seen any out of memory things, at the moment i am using 704 pf, and thats with 64 processes, 13 windows, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Fireworks and flash open, and then the tv tuner app

Hehe

I have had the PF on when I had 1GB. However, as soon as I got 2GB, I have disabled it and have yet to run out.

Jan, i'll be moving up to 2GB very soon. What sort of performance increase will I see by disabling it?

With 1gb of ram i usually never use that much. I only play farcray, BF vietnam and WoW. THe most apps i ever have running is my av, firefox, adware SE Pro, and itunes, so i am in the clear.

ok i got 256mb of ram and i got 3.88gb of hard drive space left:P how much do u think i should enable -i dont need that much harddrive space dont worry

I say it's a wise choice especially when you work with RAM intensive aps such as many modern games, when you ALT-TAB a lot and obviously graphics work. I had one GB and there were times when it would not be enouugh, so really it's a safety margin that I like to have. Should any AP need more, it's there. In terms of general performance however, you will notice very little, if anything, yet it is true that Windows boots up faster. The main difference is that the PF is no longer used. Remember that the PF acts as virtual RAM in case your PC runs out of it. However, it is way slower than physical RAM and that's where you would notice a difference.
