Do websites load far more garbage than they used to?

My first experiences with the internet years ago were with a dialup connection maybe 5 - 6 kbps, but today with an exponentially faster DSL connection of 7 - 9 megs (what Centurylink calls "10 meg") it seems like many websites take almost as long to load as they did with dialup and I see this cascade of "transferring data from/waiting for" indicators in the lower left.

Is it correct that websites have a lot more junk being loaded besides just the site content than they once did?

Ads and javascript are the two big ones. But I have read that web pages have grown in size since the early days. If your using Firefox or a Mozilla based browser install ADblock edge and it will lessen the data transferred over the net.
