do you have to have Raid with 2 SATA drives?

no, they can be set to IDE or RAID mode. But you can't have 2 RAID and 2 no raid if you had 4 SATA HDDs

So when i first install my sata drives i have to have them in IDE mode? so when i set the boot order i set it to sata drive, but have them set in IDE mode??

There's no such thing as "IDE mode" ... IDE just stands for Integrated Drieve Electronics .... as for the boot order, select either the drive directly my name (or by position) or select the "SCSI/RAID" option if you've got it on a separate controller.

Btw, what do you mean when you say "install my sata drives"??

True enough but Asus P5* boards refer to SATA hard drives as running in IDE Mode, RAID Mode or ATPI(?) Mode(something like that can't remember exactly, its another RAID type).
When you first boot it will default to IDE Mode

My Abit board is the same way. Even the manual consistantly calls PATA IDE. Though it may really irk some people we still know what people are talking about when they call it IDE.
