I cant say I like it or dislike it, since there are pros and cons to each Vista and XP. But overall I would say it's a good OS if your PC comes with it, but theres no reason to spend $200 on it if you have XP already and all your games and settings personalized.
yes, on its own, without comparison to anything else, i like it, its a nice OS, there isnt anything fundamentally wrong with it... i wouldnt go so far as to say i love ot.. but yes, i like vista
I have Vista Ultimate and like it as a OS, however I don't like the fact that a few of my games won't work with Vista even using compatibility mode. But with time maybe as time goes on some patches will be issued.

For me Vista is simply the next version of Windows(overdue) from XP. The Aero themes don't do anything for me here more then the XP theme did when that came out. What I see as the big improvement is the improvement in Disk Management and repair option now seen when booting with the installation. There you can easily choose a drive/partition to reformat making life a little easier.
You can also use the automatic repair option if there are any problems seen when loading Windows like lost or damaged boot sector/mbr information. You no longer have a need for manual commands at a recovery console. For games I won't expect Duke3D to run anymore then on XP. Only one game installed saw any serious graphical problems and was removed. HL2 Episode One saw a few crashes in two different game maps but otherwise runs normal. Having 2gb of ram already made things easier for the multiboot here.
I'm trying to figure out a way to reinstall XP for a dual OS option at startup just because of the compatibility problems. However XP only recognizes 3.16 GB of my memory and I still have two empty DIMM slots.....
The max on XP and Vista alike is 4gb pf memory. The misread amount is a common problem being on 4gb systems. Some only see 2.5gb with 4gb installed. There have been some articles for dual booting XP with Vista when XP goes on after. But the methods seem to have flaws. I reinstalled Vista twice when first trying to restore XP into the new type of boot manager as well adding another installation on top.
Finally Vista was to see the 3rd install after wiping the drive to remove all traces of VistaBootPRO and EasyBCD since neither those or the manual use of the new bcdedit tool saw results. Once article on first shrinking the Vista primary and creating the second for running XP is easily found at http://www.windowstalk.org/dual_boot_vista.htm Have fun! ! As a rule the newer version has always gone on last! Vista is no different that way!
64bit of anything is a different take on OS reality. The best comparison between that and the 32bit versions is like what happened when going from the 95 16bit arena into the NT/98 full 32bit days. But just don't plan on many 64bit games and apps being the central focus any time soon. Even while Vista being the new one out the market is still 32bit.
