I haven't clearly understood yet if I have an illegal copy of XP in my PC can I use Microsoft's KeyUpdateTool to insert a legimate Windows Key to make it legal or do I have to re-install the whole system?
 
well, i would reinstall windows to be safe. Illigal copies of xp have bad thingys floating around,so get yourself a valid xp..
 
It is actually not my PC but someone else's and they have a proper CD now. But is it possible to take the shortcut and use this tool or do we have to wipe everything off?
 
If he does now have a legit cd then format & re-instal windows using your Genuine cd.

The formatting will remove the previus version.
