Does amount of ram have to match cpu level

Hi folks was told a surprising piece of information today that i have never heard before and just want to confirm.

Can you reduce the performance of a system by putting in to much ram for the cpu to handle ?

I`m not talking about 16gb into an old p4, but say 8gb into a modern duo core.

There's no such thing as "too much RAM" except for wasting your money on RAM you don't need.

And it's pointless to install RAM past what your motherboard supports. That's just useless.

Well that`s what i thought voyager, but apparently a friend of mine was told buy someone in the i.t. industry, that you can put in to much ram for a cpu to handle and that this can cause the ram to get backed up as the cpu is not powerful enough to process it fast enough, and that you had to match your level of ram to the power of the cpu, say a low end i3 with 4gb and a high end i7 with 8gb+

id say given the market for ram...max the board right now, its silly not to when you can buy 16 gig for less than a C-note

No, ram amount doesn't have to match CPU. That is asinine. There are limits to what you should be using though. Like I very seriously any program that will run well on a i3 will every need more than about 8GB.

Even given this, there are limits to the memory controller, so that might give in a little to the theory. But as it stands, just about any modern CPU, from a Celeron/Sempron all the way up to a i7-2700k/Phenom II x6 1100T would never really find a use aside for a government level of multitasking of massive server operations for 16GB, which I think they all support.

Well athlon x3 scores pretty well in all benchmarks, might not be quite as good as intel 2500k, but for the price difference it`s much better value.

But we are not here talking I cant afford anything better than a athlon ii x3 so give me some extra points. Nothing gained for being frugal here.

No pun intended. If you want to save money, there is only a few ways to do it. But your not getting a CPU for $80 to compete with one that costs $300. Benchmarks don't count for much, but I can see how someone would find it entertaining.

Simply some of us are not stupid enough to waste $300 on a cpu, some people have other things to spend their money on, and for not being able to afford a $300 cpu, well i notice there`s no signature with your machines overall spec, is it a $300 cpu attached to a pile of cheap crap.
