Does anyone use the exFAT filing system?

Does anyone use the exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table) filing system? It is a more updated version of the FAT32 filing system.

If so what is your experience with the filing system?

Just found this information:

Microsoft has not released the official exFAT file system specification, and a restrictive license from Microsoft is required in order to make and distribute exFAT implementations. Microsoft also asserts patents on exFAT which make it impossible to re-implement its functionality in a compatible way without violating a large percentage of them.

Microsoft apparently will not share the filing system at present.

I use it when I'll be going between OSX and Windows. It doesn't have the 4GB file cap limit that FAT32 does, and OSX doesn't easily write to NTFS.

I had my coworker format his flash drive to exFAT but after a while it went corrupt and he had to reformat.

I did a format on one of my partitions using the extended file allocation table (exFAT) filing system. I really like using it on my secondary hard drive on my backup partition. Data transfers very fast from one Serial ATA hard drive to another. I am regularly getting write speeds of over 64 megabytes per second on the extended file allocation table partition.

Around 100MB/s is pretty normal though, my barracudas regularly hit those speeds on both reads and writes (Btrfs partitions).

2048 out of curiosity, how come you write acronyms out in full?

Oh and no, I've never bothered with exFAT since I use Linux.

Linux operating systems won't read extended file allocation table?

Hackapelite, the reason I hate using many acronyms is many people do not even know what the abbreviations stand for anymore. I really avoid a lot of acronyms because they change the English language even more which is already pretty mutilated.

It can, but many distros don't ship with exFAT drivers by default, and they may not even be available in the repos; I suspect this is due to patent issues.

Fair enough, though I'm sure people on a computer forum would have no difficulty with common acronyms like (ex)FAT, OS and the likes...

He has a good point. You'd be surprised how many people know the acronym, but not what it stands for.
