Does DNS server matter?

Im now in Thailand i i needed to manually change my DNS to one located in thailand: 110.164.252.222

The question is: Will this affect my internet speed when i go back to my country of origin: Norway. Which is if you did not know on the other side of the planet (northern Europe).

FYI: for some reason it worked with the public DNS servers of google (8.8.8.8 and 4.4.4.4)

Thank you for your good answers!

Yes it matters. Using Google's or openDNS will work anywhere (as will any really, but a closer one will be faster)
