Does God Hate Me?? [visual problems abound]

Ok, so heres the deal...

My computer's monitor wont come on MOST of the time. keyword being most. it will come on about in about a 2% chance [literally... 1 out of 50 id say].

Sometimes if i shake it, the computer screen turns on, but most of the time it just stays orange.

and when it DOES turn on, most of the time, it will freeze within 2 minutes, or the screen will go back to orange!



getting on the computer once a week sorta blows, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
 
I asssume you're talking about a CRT monitor (the big one...not the flat panel).

Did you build the computer yourself, or is it a prebuilt? When did this problem start occuring? How old is the monitor, and the computer? Have you tried the monitor with another computer?

Possibly, if it's a self-built computer that was just built...like it's not something that just started happening a year or even a few days after it was working fine. On the contrary, the symptoms don't seem to indicate that it's a graphics card problem.


We had sort of the same problem with an old CRT television a few years ago...you'd have to whack the sides of it to get it to turn on....hence why I suspect the monitor is just dieing.
 
ok, sorry im back to check on this.

It is a custom built computer. i bought it for 175 bucks off a guy who builds computer [its not a lighting fast computer, i knew what the price would get me]. I've switched out graphics cards AND monitors on it. One AGP card, One PCI card [current]. Yeah and now Im using a big 19 inch sony CRT, but ive used two different monitors with the system and same problems. On a side note, ive also used the monitors with other systems and its worked just fine, so im confident in saying its the actual computer.
 
Okay...did the problem just start happening, or has it been a problem since you switched out the graphics card?

When you switched the graphics card, did you plug in the power thing from the PSU into the card (if it needs it)? I assume you've pushed firmly on the card and made sure it's fully in the AGP socket...
 
Yeah the card was pushed in very firmly. Im using PCI now though. the agp worked for a day or two after i bought it but then died completely. when i put in the new pci card it worked for a few days/weeks but then started dying out and i had to switch it to another slot and it worked for a really good while [a month or two], and now its acting up and switching slots doesnt help. when i shake the computer sometimes it'd work, but thats about it.
 
As the guy WAY ABOVE said.. CORD not CARD.. Is there a short? Try moving the cord out of the monitor looking to see if you get a chage in the display.. That would be my bet.
