im about to get a cpu but dunno if it runs hot or not so that i can get the right heatsink for it without wasting too much money. im about to get a AMD 64 3700+. so..... does it run hot at normal. and how much hotter do u think it might get if i OC it.

Lets see, the 3700 would run fine with its stock hs if your low on cash. Look for temps between 40c-55c idle and 50-65 load. With its stock hs. There are many things that contribute to your temps. airflow, fans, room temp, its core ect. If you got cool and queit technology on it would be lower. I wouldnt overclock more than 250m without a hs upgrade.

compared from the system you have now alittle high temps wouldnt bother me. p3 800 is a huge step. Dont crap out on everything else if your gonna spend that much on a cpu.

Oh yeah your
Video Card: Saphire 9600Pro 128mb
Is the fastest part in your comp. And your not even getting its full potential. Everything else is slowing it down. :)

sorry for going of topic a bit...i try not to but is there a rule to how hot "hot" is...i mean what is pushing it for any cpu...i have a sempron 2600+ and it runs at 49c idle, 53c when im really working it.

hmm no, im not getting the cpu for my current computer. its for a new build. and im gonn a get a new hs for it too. a zalman7000b cu. forget stock. i guess it wil run pretty cooly, got 3 fans and probably gonna get more. isnt that humid in my area... until summer comes........ ill just probably keep off the side panel of the case or something...

and another question if you guys dont mind. its a 2.4ghz cpu. how much do u guys think i should OC it to and not reli reduce its life span. just gonna use it for games and entertainment if ur wondering. probably gonna have about 2 gigs memory too.

cpu life span is like a few million hours or something like that. Overclocking would take like 10% of its life away. I would not worry about it. Cause An OC cpu will last till your computer is considered "a piece of shit" in the no limit technology world. Then you build another. :) Plus If it does bust (99.9% It wont) and its still under warrenty Rma it. Just dont tell them you Oc it. :)

For a 2.4 cpu. Um what kind is it. Core? If you doing everything correctly you should get a good 700m or more.

I clocked my 3500 for 2.2 to 3.0. stable but it will run alittle on the hot side. so I keep it at 2.8.

not really, there are some generic numbers here and there but its kinda something you pick up on. I tend to put the warning bell at 60C
