my family got a dell (grr...) about a year ago.... pentium 4, 30Gb hard drive, and 512Mb of ram...lately i have had a lot of problems with this in time and how slow it goes when i try to run a program and listen to music on winamp...i am wondering if it was just built crappy or if there is something wrong i can fix besides ripping out the insides and rebuilding lol

get hold of a copy of hijackthis, just google it, download and run it then copy and paste the report into a thread in the computer security section.

Theres probably a lot of processes running unnecessarily thats creating these issues. Might be worth getting a reg cleaner too, forget the names now but someone will pop one up im sure

I would reformat the HD and reinstall windows...you should do this about once a year because windows gets full of crap over time and will bog down your computer.

Remember, you need a windows CD to reformat. Im his friend, i dont know if he has one from Dell.
If windows come preinstalled it should have a recovery disk that will do the same thing.

If you cant reinstall windows I would at least try cleaning up old files with ccleaner and then clean the registry with regcleaner.

6 months? I am a heavy computer user and I think 6 months is alittle extream...but I also run ccleaner everytime I am done using the pc and I clean my registry often just to keep things running smoothly.

I haven't reinstalled windows once on my family computer (3 years old) or my computer (a year and a half), and it runs fine. Registry cleaners really help though, I use Registry Mechanic and have been very happy with it, though it's not free. The only problem is that I have to be careful with what it deletes, cause it seems to like deleting a key entry for media center which renders the My Pictures area useless. I'm not sure which entry it is, so I just uncheck anything to do with media center. It's a Pain in the ass, but well worth it.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, use registry cleaners, clean out garbage files, delete temp internet files, run adware checks and virus checks, and all that crap, and it should be fine. If not then resort to your ripping out the insides and rebuilding option:D

I do it usually every 3-6 weeks. I just keep everything very organized, and have all the setup files handy, and whenever I get a virus, or my computer slows down at all, reformat. Takes me about 2 hours, then it is the same as it was before. Much easier than trying to clean everything out. :D

yeah well burgerbob is right...i dont have the windows cd...didn't come from dell...it was already installed on comp...i have defraged it about 12 times now and its still bad...i have the winamp full version...got the code from a friend so it runs to its best...unless there is a new version out or something... :D and id rather not rip it apart but i was thinkin about just gettin new ram and hard drive...it would prolly work better then :D lol
