Does PCI-E 2.0 x16 support PCI-E x16?

So yea title says it all. I am getting a micro ATX motherboard with onboard GeForce 8200 graphics, but I want to upgrade it with a 8600GT XXX card which is regular PCI-E x16. So yea... does PCI-E 2.0 x16 support PCI-E x16

yes, but it will not perform at full potential (you will lose 1-3 Frames)
 
It also works vice versa. PCIe 2.0 cards are designed to work on PCIe x16 mobo's, you just don't release the full potential of the card. In this case, you just don't release the full potential of the mobo, which is fine.

they say though that current cards dont use the full bandwidth of PCI-E x16.

but tests show a 1 - 3 frame difference

Since everybody read your post backwards. I will answer you (yes). Yes a board with PCIe 2.0 will run a PCIe 1.0 card just fine.

thanks stangle, i was wondering why people were saying i would lose 1-3 frames if i used a NORMAL PCI-E x16 card in a PCI-E 2.0 x16 slot
