Does this mean my GPU is broken?

Just thought I should ask this here...

Lately my computer hasn't ben giving me the FPS on games that you would expect for a 8800GTS.

In the pic above there are these obvious lines running across the screen; these don't just stay there, they flicker constantly when I'm on the menu (of Demigod).

These lines have shown up in the menus of Bioshock, Stronghold 2, and Medieval 2. My FPS in World of Warcraft has also plummeted in many areas.

I have 3.25 gigs of RAM and a 2.4 and a 2.67GHz CPU and I just wanted to ask whether this is a video card problem or something else?

Wait....you have a 2.4 & 2.67 cpu??? Not possible. And you have 4 gigs of ram (windows 32bit can only use 3.25 gigs). But all that aside, your card is probably over heating. Try and download EVGA Precision to check the temps. Get back to me when you have done this. It may be more then just temps, i've had problems like yours when my temps on my 9800gtx reach 80c+. But evga precision will give u an idea as to your situation.

I'm guessing that is not on full load. In that case it's hot. Does that program show the fan speed for you? I should if it's running. Mine idles at 44c. with fan at 50%, room 70F. 65c at room temp=70f, is way too hot. First thing is to clean the GPU fan if u have not allready done so. Keep in mind, that if you hit 65c on idle, your load is probably close to 90c-100c. Not good for the chip, and u may have damaged it.

65c at full load would be ok, not great but ok. If it's 65c with no game running, then it's hot. Mine idles at 44c, room=70f. max is 68c with crysis. Granted these chips can run upwards of 100c, but 90c+=damage from what i've read. And you may have done that allready. I hope not. What's the fan speed?

Temp

If the temp is 65c w/out anything running, then your a little to hot. Max temps for GPU's are 90-100c on full load. Damage can occur at 90c+. You may have allready done that. Check the fan speed/and clean out the fan/heat sink.

my first guess would be a power suply issue.

What is the power supply you are running?

If you don't know the brand and model, look at the sticker on the side and give the wattage and the amps on the 12V rail(s)

It seems to me that you don't have a good enough power supply so your graphics card isn't getting the power it needs when it needs it. That is about the only time i have seen a game do that.

Normally if a GPU is going you will see it everywhere doing everything randomly, not just under stress (which is what games do) and needing poewr

The specs for that PSU should be...
+12.0 V1: Max 14A
+12.0 V2: Max 15A

(though you still may want to confirm them on the unit itself)

If these are the specs, it is kind of weak for that GPU. If you could test the GPU in another computer, that'd probably be my first guess, but it very well could be a weak/failing power supply.

Just plyed an intense gaming session:rolleyes: GPU maxed at 75C so its definately not overheating either. I think its really just broken.

Edit: and more lines are beginning to show up randomly.

75c is good for max. So, my only guess, and the guy who wrote before me was right about power, is simply (your card is dying). Sry man, but it happens. At least try to send it back to the manufacture, and let them look at it. Probably give u a replacement if you are lucky. otherwise, (and i know times are tuff), but buy a new one w/ warranty. I wish i could tell you more. I may run into the same problem sooner or latter, so i'll be in the same boat. Good luck! (and i mean that!!)

One more thing

If u have a friend w/ a GPU (compatible) w. yours, try using it to see that it's not you Motherboard. If it does the same thing (clip), then it may be the board. I hope some of these things help. My Dad always told me to look for the oblivous first, lol

Well i have been planning on getting a new GPU anyway so buying one won't be a problem...hopefully if it IS my power supply I can maybe return it =X

Before you get a new GPU, you will have to upgrade that poewr suply. If it doesn't end up blowing with the card you have now, any upgrade you make WILL make it blow and that can cause it to take out other components, so instead of just getting a new, decent PSU, you will potentially be getting a new motherboard, processor, video card, memory etc

Spend your money on a decent PSU and then save for a graphics card...and don't buy a cheap and nasty power supply, otherwise it will be pointless upgrading and you will haev the same issues with that one

Well, just for reference, what is the minimum power supply needed for a 8800GTS and how weak is my PSU in comparison?

It would suck if I needed to change it because it seems a lot harder to replace manually than a GPU =[
